March Education Night
Join us on March 7 for an interesting Education Night as Joan-Marie Proulx leads a presentation on “Close-up and Macro Photography.”
Bring your camera to this hands-on workshop to discover the world of Macro and Close-up photography! Joan-Marie will show us how we can explore everyday subjects up close to create images with extraordinary and interesting perspectives. We will learn how to accomplish this with the equipment you already own. Yes! Your point and shot camera will be just fine. To do some great close-up shots, you can use almost any lens. We will learn how to use non-macro lenses to make close-up images and gain an understanding of how a macro lens would be used.
Sorry, no guests for this workshop due to limited working space.
Seal Watch Cruise
The deadline for your Seal Watch Cruise payment is this coming WCCC Meeting on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. Cost is $40.00 per person. Please make your check payable to “Whaling City Camera Club.” The cruise is scheduled for Saturday, March 10, 2018 departing at 9:30 AM from the Cuttyhunk Ferry Co. on the State Pier in New Bedford. If you have questions, please see Brian Santerre at Wednesday’s meeting.
Our Photography Exhibition!!
Sally Erickson, our fellow WCCC club member, is coordinating with the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center to present the first WCCC Juried Photographic Exhibition! An information sheet is attached to this newsletter. This is a great opportunity to have your work juried and possibly accepted for exhibition at the Fishing Heritage Center from May 10th through June 29th!
The entry fees are very, very reasonable at just $10.00 for the first image in each category and just $5.00 for each additional image up to a total of 3 in each category! It’s also great that the submissions are done digitally saving our members the initial cost of framing. Should your image be selected for the exhibit you will need to have it framed as per the entry guideline.
The entry deadline is 5:00 PM March 20th. Please speak with Sally at our next WCCC meeting about payment and entry guidelines.
Hunt’s Photo & Video
Our friends at Hunt’s Providence Store continue to be super-supportive of our club. They visited with us as we hosted the NECCC Digital Competition and were a focus of attention during every break in the judging. When you visit, please be sure that you let them know you are a WCCC member and that you appreciate their support of your club!

Nikon Processing Software
I’m sure you can recall hearing about software programs used to process your photographs. There are many on the market: Photoshop, Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, Luminar, On1, etc. Lightroom has been the software of choice for photographers for many years now. Of course, these programs have a price tag from $50.00 to over $200.00.
If you are a Nikon camera owner you can obtain a very good photo processing program (for photos taken with Nikon cameras) directly from Nikon. Cost: FREE
Yes, that’s right, FREE. It’s called Capture NX-D and it is available from Nikon via their download center at:
Here is what Nikon says about Capture NX-D.
Capture NX-D photo processing software lets you realize the full potential of your Nikon digital camera and lens, producing images with the unsurpassable quality envisioned by our designers. It offers features specifically designed for post-processing of RAW images and provides them in an intuitive, easy-to-use form. In addition to processing RAW images, it can be used to enhance JPEG and TIFF images taken with Nikon digital cameras through adjustments to brightness, contrast, tone curves, and more.
Although many photographers are using Lightroom, Nikon’s Capture NX-D might be a means for you to get started with developing your photos.
